Dining etiquette is one of those hidden gems most people overlook.

It’s often referred to as a soft skill, but I like to think of it as something even more powerful - a silent superpower. It’s subtle, yes, but it quietly shapes how others perceive us at work, at a dinner party, or simply out in the world. And once you understand and learn dining etiquette, it can make a far greater impact than you might expect.

The Silent Superpower of Dining Etiquette

We’ve all heard the saying, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” While personal appearance certainly plays a role, it’s only part of the picture. How you conduct yourself in public - your manners, awareness, respect for others, and comfort at the dining table - speaks just as loudly.

Understanding table manners and dining etiquette allows you to move through social situations with confidence and grace. From the boardroom to brunch, knowing what to do (and what not to do) helps you feel at ease - and that ease is noticeable.

Do Table Manners Still Matter Today?

This is a question I hear often, sometimes directly and sometimes between the lines. I’m always slightly amused when I meet someone new and the conversation turns to the familiar question: “So, what do you do?” I smile, because I know what’s coming next. I don’t over-explain or launch into an elevator pitch.

I simply say:

“I teach dining etiquette.” Then I pause and let it land.

The reactions are always interesting.

  • Sometimes it’s immediate: “Can you teach my children?

  • Others share a fond memory of a parent or grandparent - or something meaningful they learned growing up.

  • Some nod politely and ask, “What do you mean?

  • And occasionally, I'm challenged with: “Why does it matter which fork I use?”

It’s a fair question.

More Than Just Table Manners: Confidence That Carries Over

I’m passionate about dining etiquette because the skills you develop at the table don’t stay there. They carry over into everyday life, helping you navigate job interviews, business lunches, networking events, social gatherings, and any situation where confidence and presence matter.

Dining etiquette doesn’t have to feel intimidating or outdated.

At its core, it’s about:

  • Awareness

  • Respect for others

  • Feeling comfortable in your surroundings

When you know how to handle yourself at the dining table, you free up mental space. You’re no longer second-guessing where to place your napkin or which utensil to use - you’re able to focus on the conversation, the connection, and the moment.

Why Dining Etiquette Matters More Than You Think

So, why dining etiquette?

Because confidence at the table often translates into confidence everywhere else. Because first impressions are shaped just as much by behaviour as by appearance. And ultimately, when you feel prepared, you naturally show up with ease and assurance.

When you know how to handle yourself at the dining table, you gain the confidence to shine in any room you enter.
